Molly White
Researcher & Writer, Citation Needed
The creator of Web3 Is Going Just Great and the Citation Needed newsletter, who — unlike her wholesale dismissal of crypto — grants that AI tools are “kind of useful,” uses them herself, and warns fellow critics against overclaiming, even as she argues the energy, labor and hype costs aren’t yet justified.
In her words
They do a poor job of much of what people try to do with them, they can’t do the things their creators claim they one day might, and many of the things they are well suited to do may not be altogether that beneficial.
Biography
Molly White (born 1993) is a software engineer, longtime Wikipedia editor, and independent journalist who became the internet’s most trusted crypto skeptic with Web3 Is Going Just Great (2021), a running ledger of the industry’s scams and collapses. Her newsletter Citation Needed now applies that same follow-the-money rigor to tech broadly — including the AI boom.
“AI isn’t useless. But is it worth it?”
Her defining AI essay, published in April 2024, is notable for what it concedes: unlike blockchains, she finds AI tools genuinely handy for small tasks like proofreading and simple code. But she concludes her feelings land in the same place — the tools do a poor job of much of what people attempt with them, can’t do what their creators promise, and come with “similarly monstrous costs”: enormous energy and water use, underpaid ghost labor, and models built on the unpaid work of writers and artists. A “kind of useful” technology, she argues, doesn’t justify that bill.
In a widely shared March 2025 piece she reframed the scraping debate: the real threat isn’t AI using open knowledge, it’s AI companies bleeding dry the free projects — like Wikipedia — that create it, taking without attribution while crawlers hammer volunteer-run infrastructure. She has also warned fellow critics against dismissing AI outright, arguing that overclaiming weakens the critique for readers who have found the tools genuinely useful. That evenhandedness — rare on either side — is exactly what makes her verdicts sting.
