Biography
Neil deGrasse Tyson (born 1958) is an American astrophysicist, director of New York’s Hayden Planetarium, and one of the most prolific science communicators of his generation through his “StarTalk” podcast, the “Cosmos” reboot and a shelf of best-selling books. His pronouncements on new technology reliably become news.
Optimism about AI
When ChatGPT arrived, Tyson took a notably sunny view. In 2023 he told Fox News Digital that the chatbot could be the jolt education needed, reframing student “cheating” as an indictment of a system that “value[s] grades more than students value learning.” On jobs, he argued that fears of mass unemployment repeat a historically flawed assumption — that when old jobs vanish, no new ones appear — and suggested letting AI handle “thankless language stuff nobody really wants to do anyway.”
That branch of AI is lethal. We’ve got to do something about that. Nobody should build it. … Everyone needs to agree to that by treaty.
Tyson’s enthusiasm has limits. By 2026 he was calling for an international treaty to ban artificial superintelligence, likening the danger to nuclear weapons and arguing that no one should build a system capable of surpassing and endangering humanity. The stance is coherent rather than contradictory: bullish on the tools augmenting human work, wary of a hypothetical machine that would replace human judgment entirely.
