Pete Townshend

The Who Guitarist & Songwriter

The Who’s songwriter — who imagined machine-generated music in his 1971 Lifehouse project — now says he is “quite interested” in feeding his hundreds of unfinished songs into Suno to see what AI makes of them: “There might be some hits.”

In his words

I’m quite interested in getting some of my old songs that didn’t quite work because I didn’t quite get them right first time round, and put them up on Suno or some AI music machine and seeing what it can make of it.

Biography

Pete Townshend (born 1945 in London) wrote nearly all of The Who’s catalog — “My Generation,” Tommy, Quadrophenia — and has always been rock’s house futurist. His abandoned 1971 Lifehouse project imagined a networked world where music would be generated from listeners’ personal data, a concept he spent decades calling ahead of its time. Half a century later, the technology arrived, and Townshend’s instinct was to use it.

Four hundred fifty songs and a machine

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in November 2025, Townshend revealed a vault of “about 350, 450 pieces of music” — much of it, he admitted, “probably terrible” — and said he was quite interested in uploading the near-misses to Suno or “some AI music machine” to see what it could make of them, adding that there might be some hits in the pile.

He had been circling the idea for a while. On the Broken Record podcast in late 2023 he was cautiously optimistic, predicting AI would help in surprising ways as the internet had, while warning that care is needed “when it becomes what drives the machine.” And in March 2025 he told The Times, with visible mischief, that if he asked AI to write a load of Pete Townshend songs the way he wrote them in 1973, a lot of Who fans would be really pleased — a jab at audiences who only want the hits.

Where contemporaries like Paul McCartney campaign against unlicensed AI training, Townshend has framed the technology as a collaborator for his own material — the Lifehouse dreamer finally handed the machine he imagined.
