AI adoption as a feminist imperative

Witherspoon has spent years urging women — particularly in business and media — to learn AI tools rather than cede them, telling audiences that women “don’t want to be left behind,” a framing Fast Company summarized as “using AI is feminist.” In April 2026 she took the argument to Instagram, posting that “the AI revolution has begun” and citing statistics that women’s jobs are three times more likely to be automated while women use AI at markedly lower rates than men.

The post drew millions of views and a wave of criticism — from authors and artists citing the unlicensed training of models on creative work, and from fans raising data-center environmental costs. The pushback stung in part because of her book-world stature; writers whose livelihoods feel threatened by AI count among her core audience.

Days later she responded on Instagram, insisting no one was paying her, that her kids were learning AI tools and founders around her were “vibe coding,” and acknowledging that “people’s concerns … are valid,” including job impacts, environmental questions, and “pending AGI.” She added that she does not believe computers should replace humanity — but held her ground: “If you want to learn with me, great, let’s do this! If you don’t, that’s okay too.”
