Sarah Mullally

Sarah Mullally (born 1962) is the Archbishop of Canterbury, spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. A former Chief Nursing Officer for England before her ordination, she brings a background in public service and health to the Church’s engagement with technology.

A pro-human approach

In June 2026 Mullally led a debate in the House of Lords on the human impact of artificial intelligence. She praised AI as a product of human ingenuity and urged AI companies to adopt what she called a “pro-human” approach — bringing theological, philosophical, and spiritual perspectives to bear so the technology serves people rather than diminishes them.

Her intervention was not uncritical. She warned that new technology raises urgent questions about relationships, work, warfare, climate, democracy, information, and truth, and argued for protections against online harms. But her framing began from creativity and possibility, echoing the constructive engagement of Catholic counterparts like Pope Leo XIV while keeping the emphasis on human flourishing.
