Biography
Scott Wu (born 1997) is the co-founder and CEO of Cognition AI, the startup behind Devin — marketed as the first autonomous “AI software engineer.” A childhood competitive-programming prodigy, Wu won gold medals and placed first overall at the International Olympiad in Informatics before building Cognition into one of the most closely watched AI-coding companies.
Devin, and the “replacement” question
Devin drew both awe and alarm on launch — an agent that can take a ticket, write the code, run the tests, and open a pull request. Cognition later reported that the large majority of the code committed by its own engineers is written by Devin, and in 2025 it acquired the AI IDE Windsurf, absorbing the team Varun Mohan had led. Wu describes Devin as working “somewhere between a junior and a mid-level engineer depending on the task at hand.”
For all that capability, Wu resists the framing that dominates the headlines. He says Cognition never set out to replace engineers but to amplify them, and that “it should always be up to the human what to do.” His vision is a world with more software and more builders, with agents handling the toil while people set direction.
