Biography
Varun Mohan (born around 1997) co-founded Codeium in 2021 with fellow MIT graduate Douglas Chen, and rebuilt it into Windsurf, an AI-native code editor used by more than a million developers. An MIT-trained engineer, he became one of the most-discussed figures in AI coding as the tools moved from autocomplete to full agents.
More code, more engineers
Mohan’s signature claim is that soon roughly 90% of code will be AI-generated — with humans directing architecture and intent rather than typing every line. He has said AI “is going to handle the vast majority, if not all, of the ‘solving it’ part.” But unlike the doom framing, he argues this makes engineers more valuable, not less: high-performing companies will hire more of them because the return on building goes up when the cost of building falls.
Windsurf’s own story became a landmark of the AI gold rush. In 2025 a mooted OpenAI acquisition collapsed; Google then paid about $2.4 billion to license Windsurf’s technology and hire Mohan and Chen into DeepMind, and Scott Wu’s Cognition acquired what remained of the company days later.
