Stefanie Sun

Stefanie Sun (born 1978) is a Singaporean singer-songwriter and one of Mandopop’s defining voices, with more than a dozen albums and tens of millions of records sold since her 2000 debut. In 2023 she became the unwitting face of AI voice cloning in China — and gave the debate its most quoted non-answer.

The AI that out-released her

In spring 2023, hobbyists used the open-source So-VITS-SVC voice-conversion model — trained on her back catalogue — to make “AI Stefanie Sun” cover everything from Mandopop classics to Adele. Hundreds of covers flooded Bilibili, some drawing over a million views, and the phenomenon trended across Chinese social media as TechCrunch dubbed it China’s “DrakeGPT moment.” The real Sun, who had not released an album since 2017, joked in her response that her fans had “officially switched sides”: “How do you fight with someone who is putting out new albums in the time span of minutes.”

Her May 22, 2023 blog post, “我的 AI” (“My AI”), predicted that the “I can tell the difference” objection would be “a very short term response,” and that AI would soon “churn out what exactly EVERYTHING EVERYONE needs.” Yet she filed no lawsuit, issued no takedowns, and joined no campaign — unlike the labels and artists then mobilizing against voice clones. She cast herself instead as an amused spectator at her own replacement.
