Tilda Swinton

Actor

The Oscar-winning arthouse icon who warned at a 2026 Cannes masterclass that formulaic cinema is what gives AI its opening — “we have to watch out” — and that filmmakers must beat it with messy, adventurous work machines cannot make.

In her words

I believe as long as what we’re not producing is formulaic and in some way tiring for the audience, AI doesn’t have a chance, but as long as we continue to do that, then we have to watch out.

What we need to do… is what only humans can do. Make messy, adventurous experiences, so that an audience does not know what’s coming next and enjoys that experience.

Biography

Tilda Swinton (born 1960) won an Academy Award for Michael Clayton (2008) and built one of cinema’s most singular careers across collaborations with Derek Jarman, Wes Anderson, and Bong Joon Ho — a filmography defined by exactly the unclassifiable strangeness she now prescribes as cinema’s defense against AI.

Formula is the vulnerability

At a Cannes Film Festival masterclass in May 2026, Swinton addressed AI anxiety with a diagnosis rather than a lament: the technology threatens cinema only where cinema has already hollowed itself out. As long as filmmakers avoid the formulaic and “tiring,” she argued, “AI doesn’t have a chance” — but an industry that keeps serving audiences the film they have “already seen four times” should watch out.

Her prescription was affirmative: do “what only humans can do” and make messy, adventurous experiences that keep audiences guessing. Good films, in her telling, are the best defense — a competitive strategy, not a call for protection.

Swinton’s framing set her apart from the flat refusals dominating the actors’ AI debate: she neither embraced the technology nor demanded it be stopped, but treated it as a stress test that mediocre filmmaking will fail and vital filmmaking will pass.
