Biography
Val Kilmer (1959–2025) was one of the defining leading men of the 1980s and ’90s — Iceman in Top Gun (1986), Jim Morrison in The Doors, Doc Holliday in Tombstone, and the caped crusader in Batman Forever. A 2014 throat cancer diagnosis and subsequent tracheotomy left his famous voice permanently damaged.
Rebuilding a voice with AI
In 2021, Kilmer partnered with London AI startup Sonantic, which trained a synthetic model of his speaking voice from archival recordings — old films, interviews, and audio the actor supplied. The company generated a voice Kilmer could use for creative projects, an effort that paralleled the intimate portrait of his post-cancer life in the acclaimed documentary Val (2021). In his statement, Kilmer thanked the Sonantic team for restoring his voice “in a way I’ve never imagined possible.”
The technology reached its widest audience with Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where Kilmer reprised Iceman in an emotional reunion scene. Reports in Fortune and Variety credited Sonantic’s AI with helping deliver his brief spoken line — a moment audiences experienced not as a synthetic trick but as an actor getting his voice back.
Kilmer died in April 2025. His collaboration with Sonantic remains one of the earliest and most humane demonstrations of voice cloning: not replacing a performer, but returning to one what illness had taken.
