Zayn Malik

Zayn Malik (born 1993 in Bradford, England) rose to global fame as one-fifth of One Direction, the biggest boy band of the 2010s, before his 2015 departure became a pop-culture event in its own right. His solo debut “Mind of Mine” (2016) topped charts on both sides of the Atlantic, led by the number-one single “Pillowtalk,” establishing him as an R&B-leaning solo force.

A cloned voice signs a letter

In April 2024, Malik joined more than 200 artists on the Artist Rights Alliance open letter, which called on AI developers, technology companies, and digital music services to stop deploying AI in ways that replace human songwriters or dilute the royalty pools artists are paid from. The letter demanded a pledge that companies “will not develop or deploy AI music-generation technology, content, or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work.”

Few signatories have more direct exposure than Malik: AI voice models trained on his distinctive falsetto are openly listed on cloning platforms, and fan-made “Zayn” covers of songs he never recorded circulate widely. For an artist whose brand is inseparable from a singular voice, the letter’s warnings about voice theft and royalty dilution read less like abstractions than a description of his search results.
