Asha Bhosle

Asha Bhosle (b. 1933, Sangli) is one of the two voices — with her sister Lata Mangeshkar — that defined Hindi film music. In a career spanning eight decades she has recorded songs for over a thousand films, earning a Guinness World Record as the most recorded artist in music history and India’s Padma Vibhushan.

Suing the voice-cloning platforms

In 2025 Bhosle discovered AI platforms offering to convert anyone’s voice into hers, alongside AI-generated videos imitating her singing and unauthorized merchandise. She sued in the Bombay High Court, arguing the clones exploited a voice and reputation built over an 82-year career. On October 2, 2025, Justice Arif S. Doctor granted ad-interim relief against defendants including the AI voice company Mayk Inc, Amazon and Flipkart sellers, and Google/YouTube — restraining any use of AI voice models, generative AI, machine learning or face morphing to exploit her name, voice, vocal technique, image or likeness without written consent.

The court held that celebrity voice-cloning tools prima facie violate personality rights — one of the clearest judicial statements anywhere that offering a “sing as Asha Bhosle” feature is itself unlawful without permission. The order required removal of infringing content and disclosure of the sellers and uploaders behind it, extending the personality-rights shield Indian courts have built in cases brought by Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Bhosle’s objection is not to studio technology — playback singing is itself a technological art form — but to the uncompensated replication of the instrument she spent a lifetime training. Her case is likely to shape how Indian law treats voice AI for every artist who follows.
