Biography
Bill Maher (born 1956) has been America’s designated contrarian for four decades — stand-up comedian, host of Politically Incorrect and, since 2003, HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, plus the Club Random podcast. A lifelong scourge of pieties left and right, he has settled on artificial intelligence as the one subject he refuses to joke away.
Scarier than Trump
On Club Random, Maher ranked AI above every other threat on his list: “I consider this so far and above the most important issue than anything else. Yes, there’s Trump and nukes and that. But it’s actually AI… I’m more scared of it than anything and think it’s more dire than anything.”
He made the case at length in a “New Rules” segment on Real Time in April 2026, aimed squarely at the industry’s leaders — Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Mark Zuckerberg among them — whom he called “practically robots themselves,” quipping that he “wouldn’t let these guys around a mixed drink, let alone my personal data.”
We’re letting a handful of hoodie wearing, on the spectrum sociopaths… roll the dice on species extinction.
Maher leans on the industry’s own numbers — he cites a “20% chance of extinction” tossed around by AI insiders — arguing that no other endeavor would be allowed to continue with those stated odds. His position is less Luddite than precautionary: stop, look at what has been built, then decide.
