Camila Cabello

Camila Cabello (born 1997 in Cojímar, Cuba) rose to fame as a member of Fifth Harmony, the girl group formed on The X Factor in 2012, before launching a blockbuster solo career. Her 2017 single “Havana” topped charts worldwide and made her one of the defining pop voices of her generation, with multi-platinum albums, Grammy nominations, and a starring turn in 2021’s Cinderella.

Signing the ARA letter

In April 2024, Cabello was among the more than 200 artists — from Billie Eilish and Nicki Minaj to Katy Perry and the estates of Frank Sinatra and Bob Marley — who signed the Artist Rights Alliance open letter calling on AI developers, technology companies, platforms and digital music services to “cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.”

The letter declared that “this assault on human creativity must be stopped,” warning that some of the biggest and most powerful companies were using artists’ work without permission to train AI models, and that AI-generated sounds threaten to dilute the royalty pools working musicians are paid from — worsening a streaming economy in which most artists already struggle.

Cabello knows the problem firsthand: AI voice clones of her vocals and fake “Camila Cabello” covers circulate freely on YouTube and TikTok, built without her consent from recordings of her real performances. The letter she signed nonetheless conceded that responsibly used AI holds “enormous potential to advance human creativity.”
