Asked by Amna Nawaz on the PBS News podcast “Settle In,” in an episode released in April 2026, what it is like to parent young adults now, Chappelle said he and a friend had been laughing about how “no one really would know what to teach a kid” as the world automates — and concluded that “your character is your destiny.” Then came the bleak, sardonic line about AI and quantum computing making human cognition feel optional: that “thinking is for poor people.” He immediately flagged it as a joke, and then insisted it was true anyway.

The remark is characteristically ambiguous — half joke, half genuine worry — but it reads as a warning about outsourcing human judgment to machines, and it sparked wide debate online.
