David Autor

David Autor is the Ford Professor of Economics at MIT and co-director of the MIT Shaping the Future of Work Initiative. He built his reputation on unsentimental bad news: his research on labor-market polarization and the “China shock” documented, more rigorously than anyone, how computerization and trade gutted America’s middle-skill jobs. That history is what makes his AI optimism striking.

The case for rebuilding, not replacing

In his February 2024 Noema essay “AI Could Actually Help Rebuild the Middle Class” — published alongside an NBER working paper — Autor argues that AI inverts the logic of the computer era. Where software automated routine middle-class tasks and pushed workers into either elite professions or low-paid service work, AI can carry expert judgment downmarket: enabling nurses to do more of what doctors do, and paraprofessionals to take on work in medicine, law, and software now reserved for credentialed elites. The result, used well, would compress inequality rather than widen it.

Autor is careful about the conditional: AI helps “only if we invest in supporting, not replacing workers,” and he acknowledges the same tools could be deployed purely for headcount reduction. His framing has been influential — cited across policy debates and contrasted with the more pessimistic scenarios of his sometime co-author Daron Acemoglu — precisely because it comes from the economist who proved the pessimists right last time.
