The positive role that I see for AI is that it can provide timely feedback. And that’s essential when you are learning any skill.
The real risky use case is the one where people use it to do their work for them, which is I think the one where it’s being used most, unfortunately.
This is old school, new school. It’s the same school. We shouldn’t be using this word revolutionize.
Biography
Derek Muller (born 1982) is the Australian-Canadian creator of Veritasium, a science channel with tens of millions of subscribers whose films on physics, engineering, and the history of ideas are among the most-watched educational media ever made. Uniquely among big YouTubers, his authority on the AI-and-learning question is academic: his 2008 University of Sydney PhD studied why multimedia science teaching so often fails to teach.
AI belongs in the classroom — carefully
His April 2025 Perimeter Institute lecture, “What Everyone Gets Wrong About AI and Learning,” is the clearest statement of his position. Every technology of the last century — film, radio, TV, computers, MOOCs — arrived with promises to revolutionize education and changed pedagogy barely at all, because learning runs on effortful practice, feedback, and human accountability. AI, he argues, is genuinely different in one respect: it can supply the immediate, individualized feedback that deliberate practice requires — “drill and practice type stuff, really getting people to do the reps.”
The danger he flags is not the tool but the temptation: students using AI to do the work instead of to practice the work, which short-circuits the very effort that builds knowledge. His prescription mirrors the calculator settlement of his own schooldays — some work with AI aid, some strictly without, especially in early schooling.
Beyond education, Muller has treated AI as one of science’s great stories rather than a menace: he has celebrated DeepMind’s AlphaFold on the channel and interviewed Demis Hassabis on stage at the London premiere of the AlphaFold documentary The Thinking Game, drawing out how AI solved 200 million protein structures after humanity had managed 150,000 in five decades.
