Biography
Ezra Klein (born 1984) built Wonkblog at The Washington Post, co-founded Vox in 2014, and moved to The New York Times in 2021, where his column and The Ezra Klein Show function as the American center-left’s policy seminar. Few mainstream journalists have bet more of their platform on taking AI seriously.
Taking AGI literally
On March 4, 2025, Klein published “The Government Knows A.G.I. Is Coming” — a conversation with Ben Buchanan, Biden’s top AI adviser — arguing that insiders across labs and government now expected human-level systems within a few years, and that nobody had a plan for what that does to labor markets. Skeptics like Gary Marcus pushed back hard; the episode still reset what respectable opinion was allowed to entertain.
Klein’s AI coverage is a running interrogation of the technology’s builders and critics — Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, Ethan Mollick, Nilay Patel — and he is a user as well as an observer, saying he mostly reaches for Anthropic’s Claude. Abundance (2025), the bestseller he co-wrote with Derek Thompson, folds AI into a larger argument that America must build its way to plenty.
His enthusiasm is not uncomplicated. He has warned that the era ahead is one “unlike any of the eras we have experienced before” and that unpreparedness is the default; he has also argued against outsourcing the act of writing itself to models, holding the line that composing prose is how thinking happens. Taking AI seriously, for Klein, means both using it and refusing to let it use you.
