Darren Watkins Jr. (born 2005 in Cincinnati), known as IShowSpeed, is one of the most-watched live-streamers on Earth — an unfiltered YouTube phenomenon with more than 50 million subscribers whose world-tour streams and Cristiano Ronaldo devotion turned him into a genuine global celebrity. That fame made his face one of the most recognizable, and most cloneable, on the internet.

Turning off the deepfake machine

Speed initially opted in to the celebrity-cameo feature of OpenAI’s Sora 2 video generator. During an October 19, 2025 stream he scrolled through the results: hyperreal clips of him kissing a fan, racing a cheetah, touring countries he had never visited, and coming out as gay — none of it real. Rattled by how convincing the videos looked, he called the opt-in a mistake (“Whoever told me to make it public, chat, you’re not here for my own safety, bro”) and disabled his likeness on the spot.

Worse followed. In March 2026, an AI-generated Speed appeared in a TV commercial airing on FanDuel Sports Network before a Kings–Spurs NBA game, pushing a promo code for a “blockchain casino” he had never touched — the deepfake even recycled the backdrop from a real GQ shoot. His videographer Slipz declared the ad illegal on X and said the team would take legal action, marking one of the first times a fraudulent AI celebrity ad slipped onto a major sports network.

Speed’s stance is grounded in self-defense rather than ideology: he streams with tech constantly and has played along with AI gimmicks, but the wave of scam ads and impersonations targeting him — like those hitting MrBeast and other mega-creators — pushed him into the anti column on likeness rights.
