Biography
Ja Rule (born Jeffrey Atkins, 1976, in Queens, New York) dominated the pop-rap crossover of the early 2000s as the raspy-voiced face of Murder Inc., stacking hits like “Always on Time” and duets with Ashanti and Jennifer Lopez before a career-defining feud with 50 Cent and, later, the infamous Fyre Festival collapse he co-promoted.
Signing with the songwriters
In April 2024, Ja Rule appeared among the 200-plus signatories of the Artist Rights Alliance open letter, alongside Nicki Minaj, Chuck D, and the estates of Bob Marley and Frank Sinatra. The letter demanded that AI developers, tech companies, and streaming platforms pledge not to build music-generation tools that “undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work,” warning of voice cloning and shrinking royalty pools.
He has kept the theme alive in conversation: appearing on Carmelo Anthony’s “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, Ja Rule discussed how AI is reshaping music, film, and sports, voicing concern about the technology’s growing influence over music creation as part of a broader lament about an attention-starved, fast-content era of hip-hop.
