I’m not afraid of an AI version of me selling products or asking fans for money – I’m afraid of a tiered streaming service that charges 99 cents a month for all-AI content and 50 bucks a month for songs humans made.
AI might not impersonate you or take your specific job, but that’s not going to matter if what you’re competing with is distraction.
Biography
Jason Isbell (born 1979 in Green Hill, Alabama) cut his teeth in the Drive-By Truckers before sobriety and the 2013 album “Southeastern” remade him as the standard-bearer of modern Americana. With his band the 400 Unit he has won multiple Grammys, including Best Americana Album honors, and his songs — “If We Were Vampires,” “Cast Iron Skillet” — are studied as models of the craft AI is accused of strip-mining.
The barrage of lifeless content
Isbell signed the April 2024 Artist Rights Alliance open letter alongside Billie Eilish and R.E.M., which called on AI developers to “cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.” But his most distinctive contribution to the debate came in his own words on Threads in 2025, where he argued the danger is economic drowning rather than impersonation.
I fear we’re in for a constant barrage of the cheapest, most lifeless content imaginable and with the rising costs of human-made art and entertainment plus severe economic instability, most folks won’t be able to afford the human version.
It is a sharper argument than most celebrity AI commentary: Isbell concedes the machines may never write a better song, and worries instead that they do not have to — that human-made art becomes a luxury good while algorithmic filler becomes the default soundtrack of everyday life.
