John Oliver

John Oliver (born 1977) is a British-American comedian and the host of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, the Emmy-laden weekly show that turns deep-dive journalism into late-night comedy. A Daily Show alumnus, Oliver has an outsized ability to set the mainstream agenda: his segments routinely drive news cycles, regulatory complaints, and — in this case — the popular vocabulary for AI’s failure modes.

The “AI Slop” episode

Oliver first covered AI in a February 2023 episode on chatbots and automation. But it was the June 22, 2025 segment on “AI slop” that stuck: a 30-minute anatomy of the cheap, mass-produced AI content flooding social feeds — fake hurricane imagery, bogus history channels, engagement-bait Jesus statues made of shrimp. He argued that generation tools had made it trivially easy to flood platforms with plausible-looking content, that platforms profit from the deluge, and that its existence hands bad actors a “liar’s dividend” — the power to dismiss real footage as fake.

Characteristically, Oliver conceded some AI content is genuinely funny — he professed real affection for a slop video called “Catchester by the Sea” — before landing on the harms: artists ripped off without compensation, emergency responders misled by fake disaster images, and an information commons drowning in synthetic noise. The episode gave millions of viewers a name and a framework for what they had been scrolling past, and “slop” has since hardened into the standard pejorative for low-effort AI media.
