Biography
Jon Stewart (born 1962) hosted The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015, redefining political satire for a generation, and returned in February 2024 as its Monday-night anchor. Within weeks of his return, he aimed the show at artificial intelligence.
The bait and switch
In an April 2024 segment, Stewart cut between AI executives promising the technology would never replace humans and the same industry celebrating AI as a “labor saving tool” that removes the “tax of more people.” He layered in a supercut of six U.S. presidents — from George H.W. Bush to Joe Biden — telling displaced workers to simply retrain, arguing AI is “replacing us in the workforce, not in the future, but now.” The episode also featured an interview with FTC chair Lina Khan on tech-industry power.
The segment carried extra bite because of Stewart’s own history: his Apple TV+ series The Problem with Jon Stewart ended abruptly in October 2023, with The New York Times reporting that planned coverage of AI and China was among the points of friction with Apple. Months later, on Comedy Central, he was free to say what he liked about the industry.
Stewart’s critique is aimed less at the technology than at its salesmen: the gap between utopian rhetoric — curing disease, solving climate — and the near-term corporate use case of cutting headcount, with government, in his telling, unequipped to manage the transition.
