Biography

Joseph Stiglitz (born 1943) won the 2001 Nobel Memorial Prize in economics for his work on information asymmetries, served as chief economist of the World Bank and chair of President Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisers, and teaches at Columbia. For decades he has been the establishment’s most credentialed critic of market fundamentalism — a lens he now trains on artificial intelligence.

Inequality, hardwired

Stiglitz’s AI warnings have been consistent since well before ChatGPT. In a 2023 Scientific American interview he described robots replacing routine physical work and AI now replacing routine white-collar work, and said he felt pessimistic on inequality because political economy was not moving to correct it. Speaking to Fortune in 2026, he sharpened the class framing: left unmanaged, AI will take jobs while making the “tech bro” class richer, and “if we don’t do anything about managing AI, there is a threat that it will lead to more inequality.”

Crucially, Stiglitz is not a technology pessimist — he has repeatedly said AI could raise living standards if its gains are shared. His argument, echoing his fellow economist Daron Acemoglu, is that the direction of technology is a political choice: who owns the models, who captures the surplus, and whether antitrust and labor institutions are strong enough to bargain over it. His prescription is muscular regulation, competition policy aimed at AI monopolies, and support for worker power.
