Kacey Musgraves

Country Singer-Songwriter

Country star whose “Golden Hour” won the Grammy for Album of the Year. She signed the Artist Rights Alliance’s 2024 letter against uncompensated AI training and voice theft — then herself posted an AI-generated image for a satirical gag, drawing the line at exploitation rather than at the tools.

In her words

Some platforms and developers are employing AI to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians and rightsholders.

Biography

Kacey Musgraves (born 1988 in Golden, Texas) broke out of Nashville’s formula with wry, progressive country songs like “Follow Your Arrow” and “Merry Go ’Round.” Her 2018 album “Golden Hour” won all four categories it was nominated in at the 2019 Grammys, including Album of the Year, cementing her as one of country music’s defining crossover voices.

Joining the letter against AI

In April 2024, Musgraves was among the more than 200 signatories of the Artist Rights Alliance open letter — alongside Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, and the estates of Bob Marley and Frank Sinatra — calling on AI developers and platforms to “cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.” The letter warned against the “predatory use of AI” to steal artists’ voices and likenesses and demanded a pledge against AI music tools that replace human artistry or dilute royalty pools.

Her relationship to the technology has a wrinkle. In April 2026, Musgraves posted an AI-generated image of Dolly Parton as a savior figure — a satirical jab at a controversial Donald Trump AI post it mimicked — and caught friendly fire from fans who asked why an anti-AI letter signatory did not hire an artist instead. The episode captured how quickly AI imagery has become the lingua franca of online commentary, even for its critics.
