Melissa Barrera (born 1990, Monterrey, Mexico) broke out in Vida and In the Heights (2021) before anchoring the Scream franchise’s 2022 relaunch. She has a history of speaking her mind at professional cost — she was dropped from Scream VII in 2023 over social media posts about the Israel-Hamas war — and she brought the same bluntness to AI.

The Tilly Norwood boycott call

In late September 2025, reports emerged that talent agencies were circling Tilly Norwood, the AI-generated “actress” built by Eline Van der Velden’s AI studio Xicoia. Barrera’s Instagram response was immediate and widely quoted: actors represented by any agency that signed the synthetic performer should “drop their a$.” Fellow actors including Lukas Gage and Kiersey Clemons echoed the boycott call, and SAG-AFTRA condemned Norwood as a character trained on the work of countless performers without consent or compensation.

The pressure appeared to work: Gersh Agency president Leslie Siebert publicly said her agency would not sign Norwood, and no major agency did. Van der Velden defended her creation as a work of art rather than a replacement for humans, but the episode hardened into a symbol of the industry’s post-strike red line on synthetic performers.

Barrera’s intervention was brief — a story post, not a manifesto — but it helped set the tone of collective refusal that defined Hollywood’s response to AI “talent” in 2025.
