Biography
Method Man (Clifford Smith, born 1971) is a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, a Grammy-winning solo rapper, and a working actor across “The Wire,” “Power Book II,” and film. As an artist whose catalogue and voice are decades deep, he sits directly in the path of AI voice cloning.
Wary of AI voice fakes
In an August 2024 Hot 97 interview, Method Man said AI had made him “raise an eyebrow,” citing Drake’s “Taylor Made Freestyle,” which used AI-generated voices of the late Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. He tied his unease to the deeper problem of intellectual-property rights for older artists — noting he has never received a streaming check for his own music — and warned the issue runs deeper than most realize.
His position is genuinely mixed: he allowed that someone might yet find a way to “make art out of it,” saying he is “always for the creative part.” But his instinct toward unauthorized voice replication is caution and concern — a wariness his Wu-Tang bandmate RZA does not share.
