Norah Jones

Norah Jones (born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar, 1979, in Brooklyn) is the daughter of sitar master Ravi Shankar and one of the quietest blockbusters in modern music. Her 2002 debut “Come Away with Me” sold more than 27 million copies and swept the 2003 Grammys; she has since collected nine Grammy Awards across a catalog that drifts between jazz, country, and pop.

Signing against “predatory” AI

In April 2024, Jones joined more than 200 artists — from Billie Eilish to Stevie Wonder — in signing the Artist Rights Alliance open letter calling on AI developers, tech companies, and digital music services to “cease the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists.” The letter demanded a pledge that companies will not develop AI music-generation tools that “undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work.”

The concern is not abstract for Jones: her warm, instantly recognizable voice is a favorite target of unauthorized AI “covers” that circulate on YouTube and TikTok — exactly the kind of voice cloning and royalty dilution the letter warned about. Jones has not made extended personal statements about AI beyond the letter; her objection is registered as a signature alongside her peers.
