Biography
Founded in 2005, Reddit hosts one of the largest archives of candid human conversation on the internet — which quietly became prime training fuel for large language models. In April 2023, CEO Steve Huffman announced Reddit would start charging for API access, telling The New York Times the company would no longer give its corpus away free to the world’s largest AI companies. The move helped trigger that summer’s moderator blackout, but it set Reddit’s course: its data was for sale, not for taking.
From scraped to paid
In February 2024, on the eve of its IPO, Reddit signed an AI training-data licensing deal with Google reported at roughly $60 million a year, followed in May 2024 by a partnership giving OpenAI access to Reddit content and making OpenAI a Reddit advertiser. Data licensing became a disclosed revenue line in Reddit’s public filings — a rare case of a platform successfully converting the AI boom into income rather than fighting it.
The flip side arrived in June 2025, when Reddit sued Anthropic in California, alleging it scraped Reddit posts to train Claude despite claiming to have stopped — pointedly a breach-of-contract and unfair-competition case, not a copyright one, since Reddit’s users own their posts. Chief legal officer Ben Lee framed it as a demand for “clear limitations” on scraping; Anthropic said it disagreed and would defend itself vigorously. Critics noted the irony of Reddit monetizing content its unpaid users wrote, a tension Huffman has never fully resolved.
