Biography
Reid Southen is an American concept artist and illustrator with nearly two decades in film, contributing to productions including The Matrix Resurrections, The Hunger Games, Transformers, and Alien. Working under the handle Rahll, he has become one of the most visible artist-campaigners against generative AI, using his industry expertise to interrogate exactly what the image models are doing.
Documenting regurgitation
When Midjourney released its v6 model in late 2023, Southen began systematically prompting it and posting the results: near-identical reproductions of frames from copyrighted films, sometimes appearing even when the movie was not named. Midjourney banned his accounts within hours, but the tests went viral. He teamed with the cognitive scientist Gary Marcus on a report showing that image generators can and do reproduce copyrighted imagery — research later cited in the 2025 copyright suit brought by Disney and Universal against Midjourney.
Southen’s argument is both practical and philosophical. Practically, he says the models are built on artists’ work taken without license or pay. Philosophically, he rejects the idea that prompting is a shortcut to artistry, arguing that the patience and craft of making images is the point, not an obstacle to route around.
