Rosalía
Musician
Grammy-winning Spanish pop innovator who denounced fabricated nude images of herself as “a type of violence” in 2023 — and pointedly kept AI out of her 2025 album LUX, calling it “nonexistent on this record.”
In her words
Looking for clout by disrespecting and sexualizing someone is a type of violence and it’s disgusting, but to do it for four more plays is embarrassing.
AI is nonexistent on this record. At one point I thought, let’s take advantage of the fact that it exists, let’s ask it to write a verse and see how it does.
Biography
Rosalía (Rosalía Vila Tobella, born 1992) is a Catalan singer and producer who fused flamenco with avant-pop and reggaeton on albums like El Mal Querer (2018) and Motomami (2022), collecting multiple Latin Grammys and a Grammy along the way. She is one of the most acclaimed pop experimentalists of her generation — and one of the highest-profile women to be targeted by fabricated explicit imagery.
“A type of violence”
In May 2023, Spanish singer JC Reyes posted fabricated nude images of Rosalía to his Instagram — images the OECD’s AI incident tracker logged as AI-generated, though some outlets described them as manipulated photos. Rosalía responded publicly: seeking clout “by disrespecting and sexualizing someone is a type of violence and it’s disgusting.” She added that a woman’s body is not merchandise for anyone’s marketing strategy. The episode became a reference point in Spain’s debate over nonconsensual synthetic imagery and digital sexual violence, and the images were removed.
Keeping AI out of LUX
Her stance carried into her craft. Promoting her orchestral 2025 album LUX — recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra and sung in over a dozen languages — Rosalía emphasized that “AI is nonexistent on this record,” describing an album with no loops, real strings, and human collaborators. She said she once tested whether AI could write a verse and found the result unpersuasive — a working artist’s verdict, delivered in an era when Taylor Swift and other women in music have faced their own deepfake abuse.
