Biography
Sean Penn (born 1960) won Academy Awards for Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008) and remains one of Hollywood’s most combative public voices. When the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes made AI a battlefield issue, Penn went further rhetorically than almost anyone.
“A human obscenity”
At the May 2023 Cannes press conference for his film Black Flies, Penn backed the striking Writers Guild and blasted producers for resisting the union’s proposed AI protections, saying the pushback struck him as “a human obscenity.” He framed the studios’ posture as a moral failure rather than a business dispute.
In a September 2023 Variety cover story, he sharpened the point with a deliberately grotesque hypothetical: if studios wanted his scans and voice data, then in fairness he should get scans of the executives’ own daughters — so he could “create a virtual replica” of them and do with it whatever he pleased. The remark drew outrage and confusion, but Penn’s point was consent: taking someone’s likeness without permission, he argued, reflects a basic “lack of morality” no matter whose likeness it is.
His provocations landed amid the negotiations that ultimately produced the SAG-AFTRA contract’s consent-and-compensation rules for digital replicas — protections along the lines Penn insisted were non-negotiable.
