Founded in 2008 by Jeff Atwood and Joel Spolsky, Stack Overflow became the definitive archive of programming knowledge — tens of millions of questions and answers that, it later turned out, made ideal training data for code-writing AI. Few organizations have lived every phase of the AI whiplash so publicly.

Ban, strike, pivot

In December 2022, days after ChatGPT launched, Stack Overflow temporarily banned AI-generated answers because their high error rate was flooding the site with plausible-looking wrong solutions. Six months later its own volunteer moderators went on strike for weeks, protesting a company policy that effectively stopped them from removing suspected AI content. Yet by July 2023 CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar had announced OverflowAI, embedding generative AI search and assistants into the product itself.

The full pivot came on May 6, 2024: an API partnership licensing Stack Overflow’s corpus to OpenAI to improve its models, with OpenAI attribution linking back to the community posts. Some users protested by defacing or deleting their answers — the site suspended them, noting contributions are perpetually licensed. Meanwhile the existential pressure grew: analyses through 2024–25 showed steep declines in new questions as developers asked chatbots first, the very tools trained on Stack Overflow’s archive.

Chandrasekar has framed the strategy as making Stack Overflow the trusted data layer of the AI era — human-verified answers feeding “socially responsible AI” — while rebuilding the site around AI-assisted developer workflows rather than against them.
