Stephen Fry

Actor & Author

British actor, writer, and broadcaster whose Harry Potter audiobook narration was used to clone his voice without consent in 2023 — making him one of the UK’s leading witnesses against AI exploitation of performers.

In his words

I said not one word of that — it was a machine. Yes, it shocked me.

It could therefore have me read anything from a call to storm parliament to hard porn, all without my knowledge and without my permission.

Biography

Stephen Fry (born 1957) is an English actor, comedian, author, and broadcaster — half of Fry and Laurie, star of Jeeves and Wooster and Blackadder, longtime host of QI, and the voice of the British Harry Potter audiobooks. Few figures in British public life carry more cultural authority on language and its uses.

The stolen voice

At London’s CogX Festival in September 2023, Fry played the audience a clip of “himself” narrating a history documentary — then revealed he had never recorded a word of it. An AI system had cloned his voice using his readings of all seven Harry Potter novels as training data. His agents, he said, “went ballistic”; the fake was produced entirely without his knowledge or consent.

Fry cast the incident as a preview rather than an aberration, warning that convincing full-video deepfakes would follow — “You ain’t seen nothing yet,” he told his agents. The revelation landed in the middle of the SAG-AFTRA strikes, where AI replication of performers was a central grievance, and Fry voiced support for the striking actors of SAG-AFTRA.

Characteristically, Fry is no reflexive technophobe — he has been an enthusiastic technology writer since the early days of the personal computer and speaks often about AI’s promise. His objection is to uncontrolled, unconsented replication of human identity: the machine did not imitate his ideas, it impersonated him.
