T-Pain (born Faheem Rasheed Najm, 1985, in Tallahassee) changed the sound of 21st-century pop by turning Auto-Tune from a studio correction tool into an instrument, driving hits like “Buy U a Drank” and “Bartender” and a hook-singing run so ubiquitous it drew an industry backlash — most famously Jay-Z’s 2009 “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune).” He answered doubters years later by winning the first season of The Masked Singer with his unprocessed voice and releasing the covers album “On Top of the Covers” (2023).

Vocal technology, round two

In November 2023 T-Pain became one of nine artists — alongside John Legend and Charlie Puth — to license an AI clone of his singing voice to Dream Track, YouTube’s pilot built on Google DeepMind’s Lyria model, which let US creators generate 30-second AI songs in a participating artist’s voice for Shorts.

For T-Pain the move was on-brand to the point of inevitability: he spent his career defending the position that new vocal technology expands rather than cheapens music, absorbing years of ridicule for it before Auto-Tune became a default of the genre. His Dream Track statement recycled that thesis for the AI era — be part of the process, push the boundaries, shape the future rather than fear it.
