ThePrimeagen — Michael Paulson offstage — is a former Netflix engineer turned full-time programming streamer, whose Twitch and YouTube channels reach millions of developers with a mix of Vim evangelism, hardcore language deep-dives, and gleeful hot-take demolition. He built much of his brand on skepticism toward AI-coding hype, famously ripping GitHub Copilot out of his editor because he felt it was eroding his skills — a story he retold on the freeCodeCamp podcast in 2024.

The skeptic who ships with AI

Watch what he does, though, not just what he yells at chat. In late 2024 he publicly solicited a sponsorship from Cursor, then spent a week in March 2025 “vibe coding” a game in the AI editor live on stream, tweeting mid-experiment that he hated vibe coding but loved Cursor’s tab completion. On the freeCodeCamp podcast he predicted AI will create more developer jobs than it destroys.

His nuance is consistent: on Lex Fridman’s podcast in March 2025 he argued that AI-generated code degrades as complexity rises and that telling young programmers to skip hard skills is terrible advice — you need real ability to steer and correct what the model produces. That is a critique of dependency, not of the tools; his own workflow keeps AI in the loop with a human firmly in charge, a posture closer to Simon Willison than to the industry’s refuseniks.
