Yoko Taro
Director of NieR: Automata
The masked auteur behind NieR: Automata delivers the AI debate’s bleakest weather report — creators unemployed, storytellers reduced to bards within 50 years — as pure forecast, with no campaign for or against.
In his words
I also think that AI will make all game creators unemployed. In 50 years, game creators may be treated like bards.
I think that in the near future, we will move from an era where we have to imitate the style of our favorite creators to an era where we can have our favorite scenarios generated.
Biography
Yoko Taro (born 1970) is Japanese gaming’s great eccentric: director of the Drakengard and NieR series, a man who gives interviews wearing the moon-faced mask of his character Emil, and the author of some of the medium’s most philosophically bruising stories. NieR: Automata (2017) — a global hit about androids grappling with the meaning of existence — made machine consciousness his signature theme long before chatbots made it everyone’s.
A forecast, not a fight
His real-world AI commentary reads like one of his endings. In a Famitsu interview published in April 2025 around the release of The Hundred Line, he predicted that AI will eventually write branching scenarios tuned to each player’s tastes, with recommendation systems that keep improving — and that the profession of game creator will be automated into a curiosity, its practitioners regarded “like bards” within half a century.
What makes him a true neutral is what he does with that belief: nothing. He has signed no protest letters, filed no lawsuits, and shipped no AI-powered products; he simply keeps making defiantly handcrafted games while narrating the profession’s obsolescence with the detachment of one of his own androids. Where Hideo Kojima engages AI as a creative question and union voices fight it as a labor threat, Yoko Taro treats it as gravity — coming regardless of anyone’s opinion, his own included.
