Frances Fisher
Actress & Union Advocate
Titanic and Unforgiven actress who served on SAG-AFTRA’s negotiating committee during the 2023 strike that won AI consent protections, and later signed the Pro-Human AI Declaration.
In her words
We built those studios. Our labor has given the CEOs the millions of dollars that they take home every year, and we get nothing.
There is a better path, where trustworthy and controllable AI tools amplify rather than diminish human potential.
Biography
Frances Fisher (b. 1952, Milford-on-Sea, England) is a veteran of stage and screen best known as Strawberry Alice in Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven and Ruth DeWitt Bukater in Titanic, with a parallel career as one of Hollywood’s most committed labor and political activists.
Inside the room where the AI rules were written
During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, Fisher served on the union’s negotiating committee as studios pushed proposals to scan performers and reuse digital replicas — the fight that made “consent and compensation” the industry’s AI mantra. A fixture at pickets from Netflix to Paramount, she told TheWrap in July 2023 that every demand on the union’s list mattered: “We prioritize everything. No category gets left behind.”
When the tentative deal reached in November 2023 split the membership over whether its AI language went far enough — critics like Justine Bateman wanted synthetic performers blocked outright — Fisher vigorously defended the contract’s AI protections on social media during the ratification debate, arguing the consent-and-pay framework was won ground, not surrender.
Her skepticism of unconstrained AI outlasted the strike: she is a signatory of the March 2026 Pro-Human AI Declaration, which calls for humans to retain “authority and capacity to understand, guide, proscribe, and override AI systems,” alongside figures from Yoshua Bengio to Stephen Fry. Her position is consistent — not anti-technology, but insistent that performers control any machine version of themselves.
