Biography

Kumail Nanjiani (born 1978) is a comedian, actor, and writer who earned an Academy Award nomination for co-writing “The Big Sick” and starred in “Silicon Valley,” “Eternals,” and “Welcome to Chippendales.” As both a performer and a screenwriter, he had standing in both unions during the 2023 Hollywood labor fight.

On the picket line

During the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, Nanjiani joined the picket at Paramount Studios and named AI as one of the core stakes of the shutdown — a fight over how studios might use digital replicas and generative tools without performers’ consent. He described the issue as important “for everyone who works in this industry,” placing it alongside residuals and streaming transparency.

His activism was participatory rather than rhetorical: he showed up to the line during a strike whose central innovation was winning contractual guardrails on AI likeness use.
