Patton Oswalt (born 1969) is a stand-up comedian, actor, and writer — “Ratatouille,” “The King of Queens,” “Young Adult,” and a shelf of acclaimed comedy specials. A voracious cinephile and author, he thinks and speaks often about how art is made and what gives it value.
“I still want the humanity”
Oswalt has said he believes AI may get good at comedy faster than people expect — but that he has no interest in using it as a creative collaborator. Asked about an AI writing partner, he answered that he “still want[s] the humanity,” invoking the imperfect, personal fingerprints in films like “Jaws,” where a scene that doesn’t quite land still carries the unmistakable feel of a young Steven Spielberg working it out.
His objection is aesthetic and moral rather than legal: for Oswalt, the friction and fallibility of a human maker are not defects to be optimized away but the very substance of art.
