I hate generative AI with a passion. It is an abomination against art itself, and the majority of people who support it do so with the primary goal of making money.
I’ve been on YouTube since 2007 and I’ve seen the passage of many changes and trends… But none of them, and I mean none of them, have scared me the way that generative AI has.
AI filmmakers, quote unquote, are such a pain because they are usually not artists. They’re tech bros racing to the bottom to sidestep the soul of artistry and grab the bag before anybody else.
Biography
Saberspark (real name widely reported as Stephen Carver, born 1988 in Atlanta, Georgia) is one of YouTube’s biggest animation critics, with roughly three million subscribers. He registered his channel in 2007 and broke through in 2011 with “Ballad of the Brony”; his signature “What the HELL is…?” and “What RUINED…?” series dissect obscure, bizarre, and disastrous animated films — a beat that made him the internet’s de facto reviewer of bottom-of-the-barrel animation.
The war on AI slop
That beat led him straight into AI-generated content, and he has been openly hostile to it for years. He covered AI-made knockoff movies as early as 2023 (“Did A.I. Create This Little Mermaid RIPOFF?”), panned the self-proclaimed “first AI animated feature film” Where the Robots Grow in November 2024, and attacked the Ghibli-style image trend in “AI Bros Have Sunk To A New Low” in 2025 — invoking Hayao Miyazaki’s studio as exactly the kind of hand-made artistry the technology strip-mines. He has also documented AI content farms flooding kids’ content on YouTube, and in one 2025 video reported that his own likeness had been stolen for an AI-generated mobile-game ad.
I admit AI does have a place in certain roles and industries in our society… But replacing artists by stealing their work and weaponizing it against them, yeah, that’s bad.
In late 2025 his criticism escalated into a platform-level alarm. “AI Is KILLING YouTube (and you should be terrified…)” argued that generative AI had brought back Elsagate “a million times worse” and that the creator ecosystem “could collapse unless something is done.” A December 2025 rant saw him infiltrate the Discord server of Showrunner — the self-described “Netflix of AI” — sitting in on a company town hall before concluding the platform was “another shovel of AI crap being tossed onto the slop pile.” By January 2026 he declared vindication, citing reports of a channel earning over $4 million from AI-slop Shorts in a single year while YouTube’s leadership championed AI on the platform.
Saberspark is careful to scope his anger: he concedes AI has genuine value in medicine and even “as a tool for artists,” and he doubts generative AI will displace artists in film and television in the long run. His fear is the internet itself — short-form platforms where volume beats quality, and where, as he puts it, generative AI “can turn out content at a rate that eclipses humans.”
