Timbaland
Producer
Superproducer behind Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, and Justin Timberlake who went all-in on AI music — advising Suno, co-founding the AI entertainment company Stage Zero, and launching the AI “artist” TaTa amid fierce industry backlash.
In his words
I’m not just producing tracks anymore. I’m producing systems, stories, and stars from scratch.
Biography
Timbaland — Timothy Mosley (born 1972) — is one of the most influential record producers in history, the architect of era-defining sounds for Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake, and Jay-Z. His stuttering, futurist beat-making reshaped pop and R&B twice over, giving his embrace of new tools unusual weight among producers.
From Suno advisor to A-Pop
After an early stumble — a 2023 track using an AI-generated Notorious B.I.G. voice that drew heavy criticism — Timbaland became a strategic advisor and investor at the AI music company Suno in 2024, describing the tools as a massive expansion of his creative process. In June 2025 he co-founded Stage Zero and unveiled TaTa, billed as “a living, learning, autonomous music artist built with AI” and the first icon of a genre he calls “A-Pop.”
The backlash was severe. Jay-Z’s longtime engineer Young Guru pleaded publicly that “human expression can never be reduced to this,” others pointed to Suno’s scraping of copyrighted music — the company faces major-label lawsuits — and commentators noted the optics of debuting an AI-generated Asian woman avatar as hip-hop’s next star. Artists such as Billie Eilish and Stevie Wonder had already signed open letters against exactly this kind of synthetic artist.
Timbaland has defended the project without retreating, insisting “I love my independent artists. This doesn’t mean I’m not working with real artists anymore,” while Stage Zero’s founders compare AI-artist skepticism to early doubts about YouTubers. NPR summarized the critical view bluntly, arguing his generative project “rejects imagination” — but Timbaland is betting that A-Pop normalizes the way influencer culture did.
