Biography
Tess Dinerstein is among the most recognisable performers in American vertical microdrama, the phone-shaped serials sold by apps such as ReelShort — a corner of the business that Deloitte expected to more than double to $7.8 billion in revenue in 2026, with the US accounting for nearly half.
A sex scene she never filmed
An advert for her ReelShort series “How to Tame a Silver Fox” opened on her face and cut to two people having sex. There was no sex or nudity anywhere in the show. Dinerstein told Business Insider in May 2026 that it was “really jarring,” and that she worried about being taken less seriously as an actor — and about how her parents would react.
I felt like it delegitimized the work I do. I’m so grateful to be an actor, but I don’t take my clothes off. Nothing against people who do, but I don’t.
She went further than most performers in the format: she contacted ReelShort’s CEO directly. The company told her the ad had been made by “the Beijing team,” then took it down — a rare removal in a business where actors are usually told the promos came from third parties. She was not alone; Faith Orta, David Eves, and Haley Lohrli described the same thing happening to them.
What worries her is the trajectory rather than the single ad. In January she saw a promo for another of her projects, “High School Diary,” in which she appeared to say a line about being a virgin that she never said in the film.
That was obviously not as scary as having deepfake porn made, but it’s sexual in nature. If they can make me say that, they can make me say anything. And if I don’t throw a fit over this, who knows how far they’ll take it?
